Welcome to Scotch Street!

Are you new here?

This is where popular personal finance bloggers come to write a stream-of-consciousness article about money whilst drinking scotch (or whatever drink they choose).

Today, we have Michael Dinich joining us.  Michael will be partaking in Scotch Street with beer since the pub he found himself at doesn’t serve Scotch.

Take it away!

Scotch Street Guest Post – Michael Dinich

When Robbie offered the opportunity to do a Scotch Street guest post I immediately jumped at the opportunity.  I have been reading lots of blogs lately and was on the look out for something different to do.

Drink Scotch and write what comes to mind? Sure, I’m certainly not a connoisseur of scotch or liquor for that matter, but it sounded like fun.

I headed out to the local bar with the Mrs. and asked the barkeep for a Scotch.  Turns out this bar doesn’t have Scotch, they have beer. Ok, then give us a bunch of those and lets getting writing.

Now what to write about?  What hasn’t been done to death? If I see another debt snowball vs. debt avalanche post I am going to loose my mind.  Another topic I just don’t want to see talked about again is Lattes; I get it money bloggers y’all hate them.  I completely understand why, I’m pretty sure lattes are the leading cause of bankruptcy and divorce.  Wait…that doesn’t seem right.

Moving on.

Lets see what else everyone is talking about. Seems like everyone is talking about Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE)

And there’s lots of them talking about it.

Is the whole world on FIRE?

Let me check twitter…yup! Everyone is talking about #FIRE.. Guess I better write a post about Financial Independence Retire Early. What can I say that hasn’t been said? ..hmm

Anyone else hear Social Distortion in their head every time the think of FIRE?

🎼

“I fell into a burnin’ ring of fire

I went down down down

And the flames went higher

And it burn burn burns

That ring of fire

That ring of fire”

I miss the 90’s the music was better, the Politics were tamer and Finance was sexier. I remember going out to eat and waitresses and cab drivers were giving stock advice. Lousy mutual funds we’re doing double digit returns and my grandmother was calling me telling me to buy yahoo stock.

Sure it all blew up in the early 2000’s, but hot damn it was a lot of fun till then… Down Down Down.. Did you know you can lose money in a mutual fund and it can still pay out a taxable capital gain?.. ouch!

Today it’s all index funds and FIRE… “and the flames went higher” sure index fund save some money but where is the fun in that.. Boggle can suck it, I want the thrill of defeating my neighbor in the glorious challenging of out stock picking him… the sport of stock picking, its like roman coliseum fights, but with way more crying.

I wonder if the barkeep has any stock advice to one up my neighbor… Never mind Mrs. Money Geek says its probably bad if the local advisor is in the bar asking for stock advice. Good call Mrs. Money Geek.  “Love is a burning thing”

My neighbor is probably lying about his investment returns anyway.

Time to call a cab… I mean Uber.. I wonder if he has some stock tips, or at least some decent music?

Big thanks to Michael for partaking in a Scotch Street article.

These are always fun…great to read the randomness!
